From strawberries in early summer to raspberries and blackberries later in the season, berry picking is one of the sweetest traditions in the Treasure Valley. Whether you're gathering a basket at a local U-pick farm, browsing the farmers market, or stocking up to make homemade treats, summer berries are a delicious way to celebrate the season.

Where to Pick or Buy Fresh Berries

The Berry Ranch (Nampa)
A longtime Treasure Valley favorite, The Berry Ranch is known for its U-pick strawberries and seasonal produce. Check availability before visiting, as picking dates vary based on weather and harvest conditions. 7998 Highway 20/26

Local Farm Stands
Keep an eye out for roadside stands throughout the Treasure Valley during the summer months. Many offer freshly picked berries and homemade jams.

Homemade Strawberry Shortcake with Buttermilk Biscuits
For the strawberries:
• 2 pounds fresh strawberries, sliced
• 1/3 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the biscuits:
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
• 3/4 cup cold buttermilk

For serving:
• Fresh whipped cream

Combine strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a bowl and let stand for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425°F.
Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in buttermilk until the dough just comes together. Pat dough into a 1-inch-thick rectangle and cut into rounds using a biscuit cutter.
Bake for 12–15 minutes, until golden brown.
Split biscuits and layer with strawberries and whipped cream.

Mixed Berry Freezer Jam
• 2 cups crushed strawberries
• 1 cup crushed raspberries
• 1 cup crushed blackberries
• 5 cups sugar
• 1 package freezer jam pectin
• Water (according to package directions)

Wash and crush berries. Combine berries and sugar in a large bowl and let stand for 10 minutes. Prepare pectin according to package directions.
Stir pectin mixture into berries for 3 minutes until sugar is dissolved. Pour into clean freezer-safe jars, leaving 1/2 inch of headspace.
Let stand at room temperature for 24 hours. Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 year.

Ways to Enjoy It
• Spread on warm biscuits or toast
• Swirl into yogurt or oatmeal
• Spoon over cheesecake or ice cream
• Add to a charcuterie board

Tips for Keeping Fresh Berries Fresh Longer
• Wait to wash berries until you're ready to eat them.
• Store berries in a shallow container lined with paper towels.
• Remove damaged berries immediately to prevent spoilage.
• Freeze extras for smoothies, pies, and future jam-making.

Whether you're baking a homemade shortcake, preserving a batch of mixed berry freezer jam, or simply enjoying fresh fruit straight from the basket, summer berry season is one of the Treasure Valley's most delicious traditions. Grab a basket, support local growers, and savor the flavors of summer while they last.
